Tea Trivia - Popcorn Tea?

Genmaicha is colloquially referred to as 'popcorn' tea because the roasted brown rice mixed with the tea leaves sometimes pops - just like popcorn kernels do! It was developed during World War II in Japan as tea supplies began to diminish and people started searching for ways to stretch the tea.  Although it was previously considered a poor person's drink, it is now it is a popular drink in Japan!
